Winter Georgia: Seven Days of Wine and Snow
Kakheti's wine cellars, the high road to Gudauri and two nights in the snow at Bakuriani. A winter journey for skiers and non-skiers alike, designed and managed by Justvia Bespoke Travel.

- Kakheti chateau1 night
- Tbilisi
- Gudauri1 night
- Bakuriani2 nights
- Borjomi
Georgia in winter is two countries at once: wine cellars in the lowlands and deep snow in the mountains.
This trip gives you both, as a journey rather than a single-resort week. The first half is food and wine: Tbilisi, then two days in Kakheti, the wine region, with tastings of cheese, bread and wine, a long lunch with a Georgian family and a night at a chateau among the vineyards. The second half goes up into the snow, along the Georgian Military Road to Gudauri and then across the country to Bakuriani, a mountain resort in pine forest.
You do not need to ski. The free time in the mountains is yours for the slopes, a walk in the snow or a long lunch by the fire. We can also arrange this itinerary just for your own group, on agreed dates and with your preferred hotel category. Ask us about availability and the price. If this is your first time in Georgia, our honest guide for UK first-timers covers visas, money and what to expect.

Click any day to see the full programme for that day.
Day 1Arrival in TbilisiSee the day

You are met at Tbilisi airport and driven to your hotel. Then a first walk through the old town with your guide: the narrow streets, the carved wooden balconies, the churches, the sulphur bath quarter and the cable car up to Narikala, and in the evening a city that stays out late even in winter. The night is in Tbilisi.
Arriving late? The walk is planned around your flight. With an evening arrival it becomes a short stroll, or moves to the last evening of the trip.
Day 2Kakheti, and a night at a chateauSee the day

East to Kakheti, the region that makes most of Georgia's wine. On the way there are two tastings that are really about everyday Georgian food: local cheeses, and bread fresh from the oven. Then Bodbe, the convent where St Nino, who brought Christianity to Georgia, is buried, and Sighnaghi, the small walled town on a ridge above the Alazani valley.
The afternoon ends at a family chateau in the Kindzmarauli area, one of the best-known wine zones in the valley, with a tasting, dinner and the night among the vineyards rather than in a city hotel.
Day 3Gremi or Nekresi, and a Georgian tableSee the day

The morning goes to one of two hilltop places: the royal citadel of Gremi, capital of the old kingdom of Kakheti, or Nekresi, a monastery high above the valley. Then a tasting at a winery, and the heart of the day, a long lunch with a local family hosted by Giorgi, a singer and tamada, the toastmaster who leads a Georgian feast with toasts and songs.

After lunch you taste wine made the oldest way, in qvevri: clay vessels buried in the ground, a method on UNESCO's list of intangible heritage. Back to Tbilisi in the evening.
Day 4The Georgian Military Road to GudauriSee the day

North out of Tbilisi on the old road into the Caucasus. You stop above the Zhinvali reservoir, at Ananuri, a fortress with two churches inside its walls, and at the place where the White and Black Aragvi rivers meet and run side by side in two colours. Higher up is the Soviet-era mosaic monument above the Devil's Valley, with one of the widest views on the road.

Then Gudauri, Georgia's biggest ski resort, above 2,000 metres. The rest of the day is free: ski or board, take a lift up for the views, or simply walk in the snow. The night is in a hotel in Gudauri.
In heavy snow the road can close for a time. When that happens we change the order of the days, and your guide keeps you informed.
Day 5From Gudauri across Georgia to BakurianiSee the day

Time in Gudauri for an early run or a slow breakfast with a view, then the longest drive of the trip: west across Georgia to Bakuriani, a mountain resort on the edge of the Borjomi forests, smaller and gentler than Gudauri, with pine woods all around. Count on four to five hours on the road, more after fresh snow, so this is a travelling day rather than a ski day. Night in Bakuriani.
Day 6A free day in BakurianiSee the day

A day with no programme. Bakuriani has slopes for skiing and snowboarding, snowmobiles, and walks through the snow under the pines. Or stay in, read and eat well: after five busy days this is the one built for rest. Second night in Bakuriani.
Skiing? Lift passes, equipment and lessons are not in the price. Tell us when you enquire and we will help arrange them.
Day 7Borjomi and the flight homeSee the day

A short drive down the valley from Bakuriani to Borjomi, the spa town whose mineral water is drunk all over the former Soviet world. You walk in the old park along the river and taste the water straight from the spring. Then the drive to Tbilisi airport for your flight home.
Flight times matter here. From Borjomi it is close to three hours to Tbilisi airport, so with the park walk this day suits an evening flight. With an earlier flight we shorten Borjomi or move it, and agree that with you before you book.

Who it suitsIs this the right trip for you?
Yes, if you want a winter break that is more than a ski week: food, wine and history first, then the mountains. It suits mixed groups where some ski and some do not, couples, and friends looking for somewhere new for the snow.
Probably not, if you want a full week on the slopes, one hotel for the whole trip, or long hikes. For a first look at Georgia without the snow, see Tbilisi and Beyond, six days from a Tbilisi base. For walking in the mountains, look at Warm Svaneti in May 2027, or tell us what you have in mind on our bespoke trip page.
How it worksWho runs the trip
Your journey is designed and managed by Justvia Bespoke Travel in London, working with carefully selected local guides, drivers and partners in Georgia. You deal with us from the first question to the last day, and on the ground you are with people who know these places well. You can read what travellers say on our reviews page and see real photographs from our trips in the gallery and on Instagram.
Getting thereFlights and airport transfers
You fly into Tbilisi (TBS). You are met at the airport and driven to your hotel, and we arrange the transfer back to the airport at the end. The trip ends in Borjomi, close to three hours from Tbilisi airport by road, so it suits an evening flight home. With an earlier flight we shorten Borjomi or move it, and agree that with you before you book.
Flights are not included. The price is land only. Our guide to getting to Georgia covers airports, routes from the UK and entry rules, and we are happy to look at your flights with you.
Ask about this trip
Tell us roughly when, how many of you, whether anyone skis, and any questions about the programme. Jurijs will reply by email with a confirmed price, usually within a day.
QuestionsWhat travellers ask
Do I need to ski to enjoy Winter Georgia?
No. The first half of the trip is Tbilisi and Kakheti wine country, and the mountain days have free time you can spend skiing, walking in the snow or resting. Mixed groups of skiers and non-skiers are exactly who this trip is built for.
Are lift passes and ski hire included?
No. Lift passes, ski or snowboard equipment and lessons in Gudauri and Bakuriani are paid separately. Tell us when you enquire and we will help you arrange them.
Is Winter Georgia a group tour?
Enquire for available dates and group arrangements. We confirm those details and the price before you book. We can also arrange this itinerary just for your own company of friends, family or colleagues, on agreed dates.
Can you arrange this trip just for our own group?
Yes. We can arrange the itinerary for your own group on agreed dates, subject to availability. Tell us roughly when you would like to travel, how many of you there are and your hotel preferences. We will confirm the arrangements and price before you book.
What if the road to Gudauri is closed by snow?
The Georgian Military Road sometimes closes for a time after heavy snow. When that happens we change the order of the days, and your guide keeps you informed throughout.
Are flights included?
No. The price is land only. International flights from the UK are booked separately, and we are happy to suggest routes to Tbilisi.
Can we change the itinerary?
If you would like a trip for your own group, tell us about any extra nights or changes when you enquire. We will check what is possible and confirm the revised programme and price before you book.
