Tbilisi and Beyond: Six Days in Georgia
Four nights in Tbilisi, one night in Kakheti wine country. Ancient towns, Caucasus mountains and Georgian hospitality, on a journey designed and managed by Justvia Bespoke Travel.
- Tbilisi4 nights
- Mtskheta
- Kazbegi
- Kakheti1 night
- Sighnaghi
- Uplistsikhe and Borjomi
Most first trips to Georgia try to see everything and spend half of it packing.
This one does the opposite. You unpack in Tbilisi and stay there, and each day the country comes to you: the old capital of Mtskheta, the high road north to Kazbegi, the wine villages of Kakheti, the hilltop town of Sighnaghi and the rock-cut city of Uplistsikhe. The only night away is in Kakheti, at a winery, which is exactly where you would want to be after a day of tastings.
We can also arrange this itinerary for your own company of friends, family or colleagues, on agreed dates. Tell us when you would like to travel, your group size and hotel preferences, and we will confirm availability and the price. If you have never been to Georgia, our honest guide for UK first-timers covers visas, money and what to expect before you go.
Day by dayWhat the six days look like

Day 1Tbilisi, the old town on footSee the day

A walking day through the Tbilisi that grew up around its sulphur springs: the brick-domed baths of Abanotubani, the waterfall in the Leghvtakhevi gorge, the cable car up to Narikala and the views from its walls, Anchiskhati, the city's oldest surviving church, and Sioni Cathedral, which by tradition keeps the cross of St Nino. Churches, a synagogue and a mosque stand within a few streets of each other, and you walk them with a local guide rather than a map.
Arriving late? The old-town walk is planned around your flight. With an evening arrival it moves to another day, and we tell you before you book which meals are included on day 1.
Day 2Mtskheta, the old capitalSee the day

Half an hour north of Tbilisi, Mtskheta was Georgia's capital and is still its spiritual centre. You see Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, where Georgian tradition places the robe of Christ, the 6th-century Jvari monastery on the hill above the meeting of two rivers, and the cliffside monastery of Shio-Mgvime. On a feast day such as Giorgoba, Svetitskhoveli is where the great liturgy is held, which we describe in our guide to St George's Day in Georgia. Back to Tbilisi for the night.
Day 3The Georgian Military Road to KazbegiSee the day

The road north climbs from the river valleys into the high Caucasus. On the way: Ananuri fortress above its reservoir, the ski resort of Gudauri and Pasanauri, a village that claims to be the home of khinkali. At the end of the road is Stepantsminda, also called Kazbegi, with Gergeti Trinity Church on its ridge beneath Mount Kazbek. It is the longest day on the road, and you are back in Tbilisi in the evening.

In winter the pass can close after heavy snow. On those days we change the order of the trip.
Day 4Kakheti, wine country, and a night at a winerySee the day

East of Tbilisi, Kakheti is where most Georgian wine comes from. You visit Telavi and its very old plane tree, the Chavchavadze family estate at Tsinandali with its gardens and cellar, a winery for a tasting of Kindzmarauli, and the hilltop monastery of Nekresi above the Alazani valley. Much of the wine here is still made the old way, in clay vessels called qvevri buried in the ground, and the guide will show you one. The night is spent at a winery in Kakheti, not in a city hotel.
Day 5Sighnaghi and BodbeSee the day

Sighnaghi sits on a ridge above the Alazani valley, a small walled town of terraces and wooden balconies, with the Caucasus on the horizon on a clear day. Nearby is Bodbe monastery, where St Nino is buried, and on the way back there is a tasting of local cheese and wine. Back to Tbilisi for the last night.
Day 6Uplistsikhe, Borjomi and the flight homeSee the day

The last day goes west: Uplistsikhe, a town cut into the rock more than two thousand years ago, Gori and its Stalin museum for those who want to see it, and the spa town of Borjomi, famous for its mineral water, with a walk in the park and a ride up to the plateau. Then the transfer to the airport.
Flight times matter here. The full day fits an evening flight. With an earlier flight we shorten it or move part of it to another day, and agree that with you before you book.

Who it suitsIs this the right trip for you?
Yes, if this is your first time in Georgia, if you want history, food and wine rather than long hikes, or if you would rather not change hotels every night. It works well for couples, friends and families.
Probably not, if what you want is days of mountain walking. For that, look at Warm Svaneti, our walking week in the high Caucasus, or tell us what you have in mind on our bespoke trip page.
How it worksWho runs the trip
Your journey is designed and managed by Justvia Bespoke Travel in London, working with carefully selected local guides, drivers and partners in Georgia. You deal with us from the first question to the last day, and on the ground you are with people who know these places well. You can read what travellers say on our reviews page and see real photographs from our trips in the gallery and on Instagram.
Getting thereFlights and airport transfers
You fly into Tbilisi (TBS), and we arrange your airport transfer on arrival and on departure. The last day goes west to Uplistsikhe and Borjomi, so the full programme suits an evening flight. With an earlier flight we shorten the day, and agree that with you before you book.
Flights are not included. The price is land only. Our guide to getting to Georgia covers airports, routes from the UK and entry rules, and we are happy to look at your flights with you.
Ask about this trip
Tell us roughly when, how many of you, and any questions about the programme. Jurijs will reply by email with a confirmed price, usually within a day.
QuestionsWhat travellers ask
Is Tbilisi and Beyond a group tour?
Enquire for available dates and group arrangements. We confirm those details and the price before you book. We can also arrange this itinerary just for your own company of friends, family or colleagues, on agreed dates.
Can you arrange this trip just for our own group?
Yes. We can arrange the itinerary for your own group on agreed dates, subject to availability. Tell us roughly when you would like to travel, how many of you there are and your hotel preferences. We will confirm the arrangements and price before you book.
How much walking is involved?
The walking is easy to moderate: the old town of Tbilisi, monasteries, Sighnaghi and the cave town of Uplistsikhe, on paths, cobbles and steps. There are no hikes. The trip does include some long days in the car, the longest being the road to Kazbegi and back.
What if my flight arrives in the evening or leaves in the morning?
The first and last days are planned around your flight times. With a late arrival the Tbilisi walk moves to another day, and with an early departure the last day is shortened or rearranged. We agree this with you before you book.
Can this tour be done in winter?
Yes. Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti and Uplistsikhe are visited all year. The road to Kazbegi can close after heavy snow, and on those days the order of the trip is changed.
Are flights included?
No. The price is land only. International flights from the UK are booked separately, and we are happy to suggest routes to Tbilisi.
Can we change the itinerary?
If you would like a trip for your own group, tell us about any extra nights or changes when you enquire. We will check what is possible and confirm the revised programme and price before you book.
